It’s not always easy to sleep when it’s hot, but you can cool down your room without using an air conditioner or fan. These can be noisy and make a lot of dust. The British publication Liverpool Echo says that John Loles, an expert at Best Heating, has suggested a simple and effective way to lower the temperature using a standard damp towel or sheet. Just dampen the fabric with cold water and hang it in front of an open window. The method is based on the process of evaporation: as the warm air passes through the damp barrier, it transfers its heat to the water, which turns into vapour and cools down. The expert says the fabric should be damp, not soaking wet, otherwise the air won’t be able to circulate through it, which will just lead to excessive dampness. Just dampen it again when it’s dry.
The heat at night can make a bedroom feel like a sauna, making it tough to get a good night’s sleep. Obviously, you could switch on the air conditioning, but not everyone has one, and a fan can create extra problems. But don’t worry, there’s an easy way to cool the room without all that equipment. According to the British publication Liverpoolecho, John Loles, an expert from Best Heating, has suggested a simple way to lower the temperature in the bedroom using an ordinary towel, which can be found in every bathroom.
Although a fan seems like the obvious solution, many people avoid it because of the noise it makes and the way it circulates dust and pollen in the air. John Loles says there’s a much easier way to do it.
The expert explained that you can cool your room by opening the window and hanging a damp towel or sheet, soaked in cold water, in front of it.
How well the towel method works depends on the process of water evaporation as warm air passes through the towel. When water turns into vapour, it actually ‘sucks’ a little heat out of the surrounding environment. This makes the damp fabric seem to ‘exchange’ water for the heat from the air passing through it.
The expert also says the fabric should be damp, but not so wet that it’s dripping. Otherwise, the air won’t be able to circulate properly, and the room might end up feeling damp rather than cooler.
Once the fabric has dried, just dampen it again with cold water. The expert says this’ll make the bedroom a lot more comfortable to sleep in, even on hot summer nights.
