Cleaning expert Anna Louise has shared some natural ways to deal with spiders, which is pretty relevant right now as the weather’s getting warmer. The method uses scents that spiders can’t stand: mint, cinnamon and citrus. The best option is to make a spray by mixing water with a few drops of peppermint or orange essential oil, and to treat window sills and doorways with it once or twice a week. You can also pop them in cupboards and on windowsills. These remedies act as irritants to the insects’ sensory receptors, forcing them to seek another place to live without the use of toxic chemicals.
When the weather gets warmer, a lot of Ukrainians who live in flats open their windows wide to let in some fresh air. People with private houses also open their doors, letting insects in along with the warmth. Find out how to keep spiders away and get rid of them for good.
What smells do spiders dislike?
Anna Louise, who loves cleaning, shared her life hack on how to get rid of spiders from the home, and this method is described in an article by Express. The cleaning expert explained how she personally deals with spiders in the home without using harsh chemicals.
Peppermint oil
Anna Louise says that if you want to keep spiders away from your home, try using peppermint oil. In her TikTok video, she showed how she fills an empty bottle with water, then adds a few drops of the natural remedy and attaches a spray nozzle. She suggests spraying this mixture around windows and doors, explaining that peppermint oil is an effective, natural and completely non-toxic remedy for spiders. It has a strong smell that overpowers the insects, so they steer clear of the treated areas. You’ll get the best results by spraying the homemade solution on your windowsills and doors 1-2 times a week.
Cinnamon
If you’re looking for a natural way to get rid of spiders in your flat or house, try buying cinnamon sticks. Anna Louise reckons they can be used for both pest control and decoration. You can put cinnamon on window sills, in cupboards and near entrance doors. The cleaning pro says spiders hate the smell of this spicy spice as much as they can’t stand mint. If you don’t want to buy cinnamon sticks, you can use ground cinnamon or even essential oil and make the same solution as in the first recipe, simply by adding the main ingredient to water and spraying the mixture using a spray bottle.
Orange essential oil
Anna Louise said that the smell of orange also keeps spiders away. You can buy orange essential oil and add a few drops to water. Then you can use a spray bottle to treat windows, window sills and doors in your home. You can also add it to the water you use for mopping floors.
Citrus essential oil is a natural way to keep spiders away. The scent affects their sensory systems, making them want to leave their home. If you want to make it even more effective, mix orange, mint and cinnamon essential oils together, stir them into water, and use this solution to treat your home.
